Website Traffic - like bees to a honeypot
Google Adwords - put your product infront of buyers
If you have not yet come accross the phenomenon of Pay-Per-Click Advertising yet let me do you a favour.
The concept of PPC - or pay-per-click - allows an advertiser to select which specific keywords they would like their ad (shown on the right side of google search results) to appear for. Eg. If I am selling “Website Templates” and I dont have the time to wait for my Search Engine Optimisation and Organic Listings (unpaid listings or natural listings) to appear, then I can have a Google Adwords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, or NineMSN PPC campaign set up.
Within this campaign I simply nominate this keyword “Website Templates” as one of my chosen keywords, specify how much I am willing to pay each time someone CLICKs on my ad and is taken to my website. The important thing to notice there is that the advertiser does not pay for their ad to be displayed, but only when the user clicks through to their site.
Imagine if all advertising was so targetted and cost effective. Imagine if you only paid for the newspaper or magazine ad, when a person actually called your number, visited your store, or your website. That is the reality of Pay-Per-Click Advertising. It means you no longer pay for wasted and broadcast splatter. This allows you to specifically target your campaigns to people who are searching for your product or service and ready to buy!
Not only that, but you specify how much you want to pay per click!!! I’m serious! If you only want to pay$0.05 per click that’s all you pay. Your bid price per click does effect where your ad is displayed, eg. #1 spot on the first page or #7 spot on the 5th page. But by doing some good keyword research, and seeking out some niche, untapped keywords, and digging as deep as you can and being as specific as you can with your keywords you can often find some bargins out there.
An example of specific, or long tailed keywords back on the “Website Templates” keyword. You will find that if you type in the keyword “Website Templates” to Google there are 1,130,000 search results (or competing websites). If you were more specific and search for “Website Templates for Business” there are only 3,690 search results (or competing websites). The less the competition the less competition you’ll have when bidding for your keywords.
If Search Engine Optimisation is the deliver of traffic to your website, then Pay-Per-Click Advertising is the valet parking service, ushering targetted customers right to your door.
There are customer out there looking for you - do them a favour and end their search!

SEO - Art or Science?
SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is a combination of both art and science.
The science of SEO is to understand how Search Engines, such as Google, Yahoo!, NineMSN etc work - and then provide them with a website that they like. Google for example aims to provide its users with the most relevant search results possible and will give websites that they believe are relevant and informative to their searchers a Page Rank. The more relevant your website and website conent is to the searcher the more relevant Google believes it is, and the higher your page rank.
Google will look at several factors in a website to determine its relevancy and Page Rank. Some of these factors include keywords or search words which a person searching for the information, product or service you provide would use when searching. These keywords could be found in various places in your website - Title, Meta Keywords, Meta Description, H1, H2, H3, Body Text, Alt Tags, Link Text, Page File Names, Image File Names and Folder Names just to name a few.
Another element of Google’s relevancy factor is how many other websites link to yours. Google sees this as a recommendation. The more people they see recommending your website the more relevant they believe it is to their users, and the more weight they give to your website the higher it will appear in their listings.
The Art of SEO is again about understanding, but an understanding of something that is much less predictable. The Art of Search Engine Optimisation is about understanding the searcher. It’s about getting inside the head of your potential customers, thinking how they think when they search, understanding what questions they are asking, knowing what needs they have. Its the Art of living, breathing and feeling like your customer.
With the right balance of Science and Art you can be well on your way to a barrage of traffic to your website…
